Nikolai - english version

In Poland on December 6th, in a Saint Nicolas day we give small gifts to friends and family.
This pattern is my gift for you! Enjoy it!

Nikolai - reversible scarflette, knit sideways in garter stitch with lace edging. It's not too fancy nor too simple. Knits fast with no looong boring rows. It's just perfect for a last minute Christmas gift!

For this project I recomend fingering weight yarn or thicker (DK or aran weight). For my scarf I used approx. 75 grams of fingering weight yarn. Since I had this yarn forever in my stash and lost a band, I cannot tell the yardage now.

Required skills:
Yarn over, increasing and decreasing stitches, short rows (wrap and turn method).

You will need:
Neeldles - US 6 /4.0 mm, tapestry needle, two 50 gram skeins of fingering weight yarn.

Lace pattern
(attention: stitch number in rows varies!)

CO 9 stitches.
Row 1 – K2, YO, K2tog, [YO twice, K2tog]x2, K1
Row 2 – K3, [P1, K2]x2, YO, K2tog, (11 stistches on the needle)
Row 3 – K2, YO, K2 tog, K2, [YO twice, K2tog]x2, K1
Row 4 – K3, P1, K2, P1, K4, YO, K2tog, (13 stitches on the needle)
Row 5 – K2, YO, K2tog, K4, [YO twice, K2tog]x2, K1
Row 6 – K3, P1, K2, P1, K6, YO, K2tog, (15 stitches on the needle)
Row 7 – K2,YO, K2tog, K11,
Row 8 – cast off 6 stitches, K6, YO, K2tog.

How to knit Nikolai:

Cast on 10 stitches.
Row 1: K1, pm, knit 1 row of lace pattern.
Row 2: knit row 2 of lace pattern, K1,
Row 3: Slip 1 stitch purlwise with yarn in front, knit row 3 of lace pattern. From this moment you slip the first stitch in every odd row.
Row 4 – 7, continue knitting body and border as established,
Row 8 – knit row 8 of lace pattern, slip marker, add one stitch (kbf).
Continue increasing stitches in every 8 row until piece has 9 lace motifs.
Then knit next 9 motifs, increasing in every 4 and 8 row of lace motif repeat. You have now 18 leafs on border :-)

Now the short rows start:

You don't increase stitches on scarfs body now.

*Knit 7 rows as established. In 8 rowknit lace motif, slip marker, knit 20, wrap and turn, knit 20 stitches, slip marker and then knit as established next 7 rows. In 8 row of lace pattern repeat knit lace motif, slip marker, knit 10, wrap and turn, knit to marker and continue with lace pattern.*
Continue knitting until scarf has 38 lace pattern repeats.

Short rows part ends here, decreasing starts :-)
While knitting next 9 repeats of lace motif, you dercease 1 stitch (using k2tog) in scarfs body after every 4 and 8 row (right after marker), then in next 9 motif repeats you decrease one stitch after every 8 row of lace pattern repeat, righr after marker.
Cast off.

Now block scarf in half circle or even horseshoe shape, weave in ends and wear it!

Post scriptum: this is my first knitting pattern so it may be not perfect. If you spot any mistake or if pattern is difficult to understand, please, let me know!

  5. This is a lovely pattern that I'm really enjoying knitting. Finally I've found a good enough use for a skein of Fleece Artist Merino 2/6 in my stash. I've had it for years and no pattern was good enough. This one is! Thank you!
